      Jim is the principal architect of TriageMD, a new financial education and advice model designed to change the financial trajectory of the lives of physicians and their families. “I believe that by helping physicians implement best practices for saving and paying down debt, informing them about evidence-based standards of investing, and giving them robust metrics to track their progress, we can begin to address the looming retirement crisis among many of even the most successful physicians.” Jim met his first physician client in 1979. He has worked with doctors in multiple specialties across the country and in one case with three physicians from the same family. He has spoken in hospitals and at physician practices, and is the co-author of two books for physicians, Pay Yourself First: A Financial Guide for Doctors Entering Practice and Changing Outcomes: A Financial Recovery Plan for Peak-Career Physicians. Jim has been a frequent presenter at national conferences for financial advisors, and has been profiled in the Financial Times and quoted in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Jim is a graduate of Swarthmore College. In 1990, he co-founded TGS Financial Advisors with David Burd, CFP®, who has been was named one of the “150 Best Financial Advisers for Doctors” by Medical Economics magazine in each of the last six years. As the firm’s Chief Investment Strategist, Jim is responsible for coordinating investment research initiatives and recommending changes to the firm’s investment committee. He holds the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, Certified Investment Management Analyst® and Certified Private Wealth Advisor® designations. Jim is married to Amy, an epidemiologist with an MPH from Johns Hopkins who works as a Measurement Specialist for A. I. Dupont Hospital. They have three children, Jack, Katharine, and Alex. In 2007-2008, the Hemphill family traveled for a year and a day, visiting 26 countries on five continents. Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. owns the certification marks CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ and CFP® in the U.S., which it awards to individuals who successfully complete CFP Board’s initial and ongoing certification requirements.
